The Legacy of Urushi Art

Urushi, also known as Japanese lacquerware, is a traditional art form witha history spanning over 8,000 years. It involves applying the sap of the urushi tree, a natural resin, to various surfaces like wood, paper, and metal.Urushi is prized for its durability, waterproof qualities, and distinctive aesthetic appeal, playing a significant role in Japanese culture and art.

At the heart of this tradition lies raw lacquer, a rare material harvested by hand from native lacquer trees. It takes extraordinary patience and care—a hundred miles and a thousand cuts, as the old saying goes—to collect just 500 grams of this precious sap.

You can read more about raw lacquer here, and more about making process here.

FAQs

Please read our FAQs page to find out more.

Why is each bracelet one of a kind?

Each piece is handcrafted over 60 days using traditional methods. The layering and curing process creates natural variations in color and texture — no two bracelets can ever be exactly the same.

No mass production. No replicas. Just true craftsmanship.

Will the color of the bracelet fade over time?

No — not at all. Natural lacquer is incredibly durable and color-stable. Many lacquered artifacts in museums, some over a thousand years old, still retain their original color and shine.

With proper care, your bracelet will stand the test of time — and look even better as it ages.

Are Karma Patron’s lacquered bracelets safe to wear?

Yes. Every bracelet is made from natural, skin-safe materials.

The lacquer we use comes from the sap of the East Asian lacquer tree — a plant-based resin trusted for over 8,000 years in China and Japan.

After proper curing, it’s completely stable, non-toxic, waterproof, and heat-resistant. This ancient craft has been used by master artisans for centuries — and it’s still one of the safest natural finishes today.

Does harvesting lacquer harm the trees or the environment?

Not at all. Lacquer sap is sustainably tapped — much like maple syrup — without cutting them down. Only trees at least 8 years old are used, and after each harvest, the tree rests for 2 full years.

This careful cycle protects both the tree and the environment. Skilled harvesters have followed these eco-friendly methods for generations.

Why does it take over 60 days to make one bracelet?

Each bracelet is made by hand, layer by layer. The natural lacquer must be applied slowly and cured properly between each coat — no shortcuts.

This 60+ day process is what gives the bracelet its strength, depth, and one-of-a-kind character.
